Greece Digital Nomad Visa 2026: Requirements and How to Apply
Working from a Greek island sounds simple. The paperwork isn't. A tourist stay doesn't automatically let a non-EU remote worker live in Greece for a year.
The Greece digital nomad visa gives qualifying employees, freelancers and foreign business owners a legal route to work remotely from the country.
The main income requirement is €3,500 net per month. Your employer, clients or business must remain outside Greece.
Application rules also changed in February 2026. Tourists and visa-waiver visitors can no longer make an initial digital nomad residence permit application after entering Greece.
That catches people out. So do the fees, tax rules and difference between the visa and residence permit.
Visa, residence and tax rules can change. Requirements may also differ between consulates. Confirm the current process with the Greek authority handling your application.

Greece Digital Nomad Visa Quick Facts
Greece's government-referenced Work From Greece portal confirms the €3,500 threshold, family increases and two-year residence permit. It also states that holders can't work for Greek companies as employees or freelancers.
What Is the Greece Digital Nomad Visa?
The Greece digital nomad visa is a national long-stay visa for third-country nationals who perform their work remotely.
Applicants may work for a foreign employer, serve clients outside Greece or run a company registered abroad. The route is sometimes called the Greece remote work visa, although its formal category is a Type D national visa.
Greece introduced the digital nomad route through Law 4825/2021. The current Migration Code is Law 5038/2023, while Law 5275/2026 changed the in-country residence permit process in February 2026.
The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs describes the visa as an option for non-European professionals working remotely for foreign employers.
A tourist stay, national visa and residence permit aren't the same.
A Greek visa or residence permit doesn't give you the right to settle in another Schengen country. Travel outside Greece remains subject to Schengen short-stay rules.
Who Is Eligible for the Greece Digital Nomad Visa?
You may qualify if you're a third-country national who can perform your work using a laptop, internet connection and other communication tools. EU, EEA and Swiss citizens normally rely on free-movement rights instead.
US, UK, Canadian, Australian and Pakistani citizens are examples of third-country nationals for this route. Every applicant must still follow the rules of the consulate serving their legal residence.
Your employer, clients or owned business must be based outside Greece. Foreign company owners should provide the company's registration, activity, address and proof of their role.
Check these points before applying:
- You're a non-EU, non-EEA and non-Swiss citizen.
- Your employer, clients or business are outside Greece.
- You can prove at least €3,500 in net monthly income.
- Your income is stable and traceable.
- You can obtain the requested insurance and certificates.
- You can apply through the correct Greek consular authority.
Freelancers can qualify with one or several foreign clients. Contracts, invoices and bank deposits should tell the same story.
The visa doesn't allow you to take a Greek job or provide freelance services to Greek companies.
Greece Digital Nomad Visa Income Requirements
The main applicant must show at least €3,500 in monthly income after tax or sufficient resources for the intended stay.
Gross salary isn't the same as net income. Your evidence should show what remains after applicable taxes and deductions.
The required amount increases by 20% for a spouse or legally recognised cohabiting partner. Each dependent child adds another 15%.
Evidence may include employment contracts, service agreements, payslips, client invoices and recent bank statements.
Make sure the figures match. A salary stated in an employer letter should appear in the bank records.
Can savings replace regular income? Work From Greece says sufficient resources may be shown through an employment contract, service agreement, employment certificate or bank account. Ask your consulate what evidence it accepts before relying on savings alone.
What Documents Are Required for the Greece Digital Nomad Visa?
Your application must follow the document list issued by the Greek consulate serving your main country of residence.
Common Type D visa documents include a passport, criminal-record certificate, medical certificate and travel insurance.
The policy should cover medical treatment, emergency hospital care and repatriation during the visa period.
You'll also need evidence of foreign work and sufficient income.
Public documents may require an apostille or another form of legalisation. Your consulate may also request certified Greek translations.
Check document-age and translation rules before paying for certificates or translation work.
How to Apply for the Greece Digital Nomad Visa
Apply through the Greek consular authority responsible for your main country of residence. Don't enter Greece as a tourist and expect to change your status later.
Find the Correct Consular Authority
Start with the Greek consular authority serving your legal residence. Some countries use an external visa application centre. Others manage national visa applications directly.
Check the local form, appointment method, document list and payment instructions.
Prepare Your Documents
Order criminal-record and medical certificates early. Some certificates take several weeks to issue, authenticate or translate.
Keep paper originals and digital copies. Names, dates, income figures and employment details should remain consistent.
Submit the Application
Current EU and government-referenced guidance says national visa applications are made through the responsible Greek embassy or consulate.
Submission may take place in person, by email or by registered letter, depending on local procedures.
Attend the Appointment or Interview
Bring the requested originals. Be ready to explain your role, who pays you and how the work can be completed remotely. Don't describe plans to find Greek clients.
Wait for the Decision
The consular authority should confirm receipt and application status within ten days.
That isn't a guaranteed ten-day approval. Government-referenced guidance says successful issuance may take around one month, but Greece doesn't promise one fixed processing period.
2026 application update: Since February 5, 2026, tourists and visa-waiver visitors can't make an initial Digital Nomad Residence Permit application from inside Greece.
You must obtain the Digital Nomad Visa through a Greek consular authority abroad. After entering with that visa, you may apply locally for the residence permit.
Apply for a Residence Permit if Staying Longer
The visa and residence permit are separate stages. Apply for the Digital Nomad Residence Permit before the visa expires. You'll generally need the supporting visa documents again, plus proof of accommodation in Greece.
Current guidance describes the permit as valid for two years. Applications are handled through the Ministry of Migration and Asylum.
How Much Does the Greece Digital Nomad Visa Cost?
Public sources don't present the main visa fee consistently. Work From Greece currently lists a €75 visa application fee and a €150 administrative charge for each accompanying family member.
The EU Immigration Portal lists national visa fees of €75, €90 or €180 depending on the category, but it doesn't clearly assign one main fee to digital nomads.
Confirm the exact amount and payment method with your consulate.
Don't treat the visa fee as your total application cost. Insurance, translations, certificates, legalisation and travel to an appointment can add much more.
How Long Does Visa Processing Take?
Allow more than ten days for the complete process. The ten-day figure refers to confirmation of receipt and application status. It doesn't include appointment waiting, ministry processing, passport return or the later residence permit.
Incomplete translations and inconsistent financial evidence can cause delays. Avoid booking non-refundable travel around an estimated approval date.
Visa Duration and Residence Permit Renewal
The initial national visa can be valid for up to 12 months. A holder who still meets the income and foreign-work conditions may apply for a Digital Nomad Residence Permit before the visa expires.
The permit is valid for up to two years and may be renewed for further two-year periods. This isn't automatic permanent residence or citizenship.
Long-term immigration routes have separate legal residence, presence and integration requirements.
Do Digital Nomads Pay Tax in Greece?
Possibly. A digital nomad visa doesn't decide your final tax position. AADE states that someone present in Greece for more than 183 days during any 12-month period may become a Greek tax resident from the first day of presence.
Permanent residence, habitual abode and the centre of personal or economic interests can also matter.
Greek tax residents are generally taxed on worldwide income. A Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement may decide which country can tax specific income or allow credit for tax already paid abroad.
The often-mentioned 50% Article 5C tax treatment isn't granted automatically with the visa. Get advice from a cross-border tax professional before changing tax residence or spending most of the year in Greece.
What Should You Do After Arriving in Greece?
Keep copies of your visa file, accommodation records, insurance and authenticated documents.
You may need a Greek tax identification number, known as an AFM, for banking, tax matters or other services. Greek banks may also request proof of address, income and legal residence.
Track your residence permit deadline if you plan to stay beyond the visa period. And test the fixed broadband at your exact address. Mobile data works well as backup, but frequent video meetings need a reliable primary connection.
Best Places in Greece for Digital Nomads
Athens suits remote workers who want international flights, coworking spaces and easy access to professional services.
Thessaloniki offers large-city life at a slower pace. Crete works for longer island stays because its larger towns remain active throughout the year.
Kalamata, Syros and Ioannina offer quieter alternatives.
Your preferred location may also depend on the season.
Many digital nomads combine Greece with other European destinations, so choosing a flexible Europe eSIM can make multi-country travel easier.
How Digital Nomads Can Stay Connected in Greece
Reliable internet matters when your income depends on video calls, cloud platforms and client messages.
A Greece eSIM gives you mobile data as soon as you arrive. You can use it for maps, accommodation check-in, banking apps and urgent messages without visiting a SIM shop.
An eSIMCard plan can also provide backup data when apartment Wi-Fi fails. Compare the best eSIM and compare the plans.
Travelling to several supported countries? An eSIM may be more practical than installing a separate plan at every stop.
Before buying, check the data allowance, validity period, hotspot support and fair-use terms.
How to Check Whether Your Phone Supports eSIM
Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. To check whether your phone supports esim or not, visit the phone compatibility checker on our website.
- On an iPhone, open Settings > General > About and look for an EID. You can also check Settings > Cellular or Mobile Service for Add eSIM.
- On a Google Pixel, open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Add SIM. Look for Set up an eSIM.
- On a Samsung Galaxy phone, open Settings > Connections > SIM manager. Look for Add eSIM.
Common Application Mistakes to Avoid
- Applying through a consulate that doesn't serve your legal residence.
- Showing gross salary when the threshold refers to net income.
- Treating savings as a guaranteed replacement for regular earnings.
- Mentioning Greek employers or clients in your declaration.
- Relying on the old tourist or visa-waiver permit route.
- Treating a ten-day status reply as guaranteed approval.
- Submitting old or unauthenticated public documents.
- Buying insurance that ends before the requested visa period.
- Assuming accompanying family members can automatically work locally.
- Treating Greek residence as permission to settle throughout Europe.
- Booking non-refundable long-term housing before approval.
- Using an old blog instead of current consular instructions.
Conclusion
The Greece digital nomad visa can suit remote employees, freelancers and foreign business owners with steady income.
Confirm the correct consulate, prepare consistent financial records and authenticate public documents before submission. Check your tax position before spending most of the year in Greece.
Once your visa and accommodation plans are settled, arrange mobile data before departure. An eSIMCard can provide internet for maps, check-in details and work messages as soon as you arrive.
Check phone compatibility, choose the right data plan and install it while you still have trusted Wi-Fi.
